Every bride asks me the same thing three weeks out: what do I put in my ears? For a garden ceremony on Long Island she wore diamond drops — and not much more complicated than that.

There was no tiara, no headpiece, no elaborate suite borrowed for the day and returned the next morning. For the ceremony at Old Westbury Gardens, Paige Lorenze wore a big diamond drop — pear-cut, set long, hanging clean against the jaw. The gown did the drama. The earrings only had to be beautiful and stay out of its way.

She told Vogue she wanted to feel completely like herself that day — and let that guide everything, down to the jewellery. Which explains the earrings. Diamonds in her ears is how she has dressed for years. The wedding only made them longer.

Is there an ear formula that almost always works?

Start with the statement piece — the biggest shape — and work up the ear, keeping every earring in the same family so it follows the ear’s natural line. Finish near the top with a cuff or piercing; an ear that stops halfway looks unfinished. For brides with a single piercing, a climber does the work of a whole stack — length and interest along the ear, and a considered finish without a second hole.
