Hailey, Kylie and Margot Are All Wearing Pear Studs

Hailey wore 20 carats of them to the Grammys. Kylie wore two on one ear, courtside in a T-shirt. Margot tilts hers. Here's how I'd wear a pear stud on a Tuesday, then dress it up for Friday.

ELLE ran a story this week saying the it-girl diamond stud has changed shape, and I agree with every word. It isn't round any more. It's a pear.

Their proof is three women: Hailey Bieber, Kylie Jenner and our own Margot Robbie. I went back through the photos and they're right. All three keep reaching for the same stone, and each of them wears it a little differently. That's what makes it such a good one to copy.

Hailey's pair is the dramatic one. At the Grammys in February she wore 20-carat pear studs with a strapless black gown and her hair slicked straight back, so nothing sat between the stones and the cameras. Page Six reported a pear-shaped diamond choker and a pear ring with them, but the earrings are what I remember.

Kylie's version is the one I'd actually wear. Courtside in Cleveland in May, the night the Knicks beat the Cavaliers to reach the NBA Finals, she wore a vintage Knicks T-shirt, baggy jeans and kitten heels. Harper's Bazaar spotted a large pear-shaped diamond in her lobe and a matching, slightly smaller one in the same cut on the flat of her ear. Two pears on one ear, with a T-shirt.

Then there's Margot, who wears hers on an angle. ELLE points out that a pear can point up, point down or sit tilted, and Margot is the one who tilts. At the London premiere of A Big Bold Beautiful Journey last September, she wore 20-carat pear studs with a sheer beaded gown.

The ear breakdown

Why a pear and not a round stone? A round stud reads as a dot from across a room. A pear is longer, so it follows the line of your jaw, and the point gives it a direction. Turn it up and it looks neat. Tilt it and it looks a little more undone.

Kylie's ear is the easiest to copy, and you only need two piercings. The bigger pear goes in your lobe. The smaller one sits higher on the same ear. Keep both stones the same cut and the same metal, and it looks planned rather than collected.

The Kylie ear

la Pera Stud in your lobe and a Versa stud, drop off, higher up on the same ear. Hair tucked behind your ear so both stones show.

02
The Margot tilt

One pear in each lobe, turned slightly before you fasten the back so the point leans forward. It's the smallest change, and it makes a plain stud look styled.

Editor's pick: the Versa

If you're buying one pair, make it the Versa, because it's two earrings in one. On its own, each earring is a pear-cut stud that sits close to the lobe, which is the Kylie look with a T-shirt and jeans. When you want more, attach the detachable Oval Cut Drop underneath the stud and you're wearing a full drop earring for dinner. Take it off the next morning and you're back to studs.

If you'd rather go bigger in the lobe, the la Pera Stud is 2 carats an ear in a three-prong setting. ELLE suggests somewhere between half a carat and 2 carats for everyday wear, so la Pera sits right at the top of that range. It's low profile, so it sits flush against the ear, and the pear shape keeps it upright instead of tipping forward. That's the closest I'd get to Hailey's Grammys pair for a Tuesday.

If you only buy one thing after reading this, make it the Versa. Wear the pear studs Monday to Thursday, then attach the drops on Friday. And if you want Kylie's ear, put la Pera in your lobe and move a Versa stud up to the next hole.

With love, Lucia
